This special issue of Neuroethics will focus on concussion and mild Traumatic Brain
Injury (mTBI). Concussion/mTBI affects millions of individuals each year and the
long term neurological effects of concussion are currently being debated.
Concussion is a common injury among professional, amateur and youth athletes in
many sports, and has also been called the “signature injury” of military personnel in
the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts. This significant public health problem has
received considerable attention in the popular press, and is an area of active research in the neurosciences, but is
an underdeveloped area of neuroethical inquiry.

2nd Global Conference on Sport

Friday 1st November 2013 – Sunday 3rd November 2013 Athens, Greece

Call for Presentations

Who benefits from sport? The question in the modern world is complex, and demands inter-disciplinary approaches to its solution. Sport in modernity is an everyday part of leisure lives, an aspirational physical activity or something that gives people a sense of belonging through being sports fans. Sport can be a vehicle for social and economic development, yet the economic and political formations of globalisation and modernity bring the spectre of contracts, deals, profits and the pursuit of glory at the expense of everything good about sport.

This conference, the second global conference on Sport held by IDN, aims to bring together scholars from a wide range of disciplines – sociology, cultural studies, philosophy, history, political studies, urban studies, management and marketing, geography, and psychology and sport science – who are interested in exploring sport’s social, political and economic influences and roles. We are interested in sport’s histories, sport in the here and now and sport’s futures. The project is for cheerleaders of sport, critics of sport, and all those in-between who would like to make a contribution to this inter-disciplinary approach to understanding sport.

We would be interested in research or theory papers on the following themes:

-Sport and social identity

-Youth sport

-Amateur sport

-Ontology of sport

-Ethics and sport

-Sport for development

-Commercialization and sport

-Sport and place

-Sports management and sports marketing

-History of modern sport

-Sport and communities

-Sport and popular culture

-Sport and celebrities

-The politics of sport

-Sports fandom

WHAT TO SEND:

The Steering Group particularly welcomes the submission of pre-formed panel proposals. 300 word abstracts should be submitted by Friday 14th June 2013. If an abstract is accepted for the conference, a full draft paper or outlibe of the presentation should be submitted by Friday 13th September 2013.

300 word abstracts should be submitted simultaneously to both Organising Chairs; abstracts may be in Word, WordPerfect, or RTF formats with the following information and in this order:

a) author(s), b) affiliation, c) email address, d) title of abstract, e) body of abstract, f) up to 10 keywords.

E-mails should be entitled: SPORT2 Abstract Submission.

WHO TO:

Joint Organising Chairs:

Karl Spracklen: K.Spracklen@leedsmet.ac.uk Rob Fisher: sport2@inter-disciplinary.net

The conference is part of the making Sense Of: programme of research projects. It aims to bring together people from different areas and interests to share ideas and explore various discussions which are innovative and exciting.
