Special Issue: The Sport Philosophy of J.S. Russell
Editor – Paul Gaffney
For over twenty-five years, John Russell has been one of the most original and influential voices in the philosophy of sport. His work is noteworthy not only for its continuing impact but also for its range of interests. He has contributed seminal explorations in many areas, notably in his work on sport-law, broad internalism, cheating, the moral virtues of sport, and a reconsideration of Suits’ Utopia, to name but a few. This Special Issue will give commentators an opportunity to offer fresh assessments of these important contributions. Topics may include (but will not be limited to):
Russell’s pioneering work in sport-law philosophy
Broad internalism as a theory of sport
The continuity thesis and separation thesis
Resilience and striving in sport as its cardinal virtues
The play principle in sport as in part a challenge to moral and perfectionist elements in sport
Moral development and sport
The ethics of strategic fouling
The value and role of dangerous sports, including for children
Performance enhancing drugs as a collective action and harm reduction problem
The concept of cheating in sports
The notion of idleness and the critique of Suits’ account of Utopia
Moral realism and sport
