Call for the new Editor-in-Chief of Sport, Ethics and Philosophy
Sport, Ethics & Philosophy is the peer-reviewed journal of the British Philosophy of Sport Association (BPSA), published four times a year by Routledge, Taylor & Francis. It publishes high quality articles from a wide variety of philosophical traditions, providing a forum for both theoretical and applied philosophical approaches concerning the nature, value and understanding of sports and related practices.
BPSA and Sport, Ethics & Philosophy are seeking applications for the position of Editor-in-Chief. The position will begin on 1 January 2025, with a transition period in 2025 with the current Editor-in-Chief, Dr Andrew Edgar.
Qualifications and Requirements
Applicants should have an established record of scholarship in the area of sports philosophy and ethics. Preference will be given to candidates who possess the appropriate editorial experience and ability to provide a clear vision for the development of the journal. Key qualities sought for the position of Editor-in-Chief include a solid awareness of current developments and topics under discussion in the philosophy of sport, sound judgement as to the quality of research, and an understanding of the peer-review process, as well as energy, enthusiasm, managerial skills to oversee the editorial cycle and meet deadlines and an ability to attract leading scholars in the field to submit papers and to serve on the editorial board
Term
The initial term will be from January 2025 to December 2029. There is the option of extending this term beyond 2029.
Major Responsibilities
- Providing strategic leadership for the journal;
- Improve further the quality of the journal and its status in the field;
- Managing the peer-review process in the journal’s ScholarOne system, assigning reviewers and making final decisions on manuscripts in a timely manner.
- Managing the editorial board, and help identify and appoint qualified members as and when appropriate;
- Commissioning cutting-edge essays and topical special issues;
- Deciding the content and running order of each issue of the Journal;
- Working with the Publisher to promote the reputation and academic success of the Journal.
Application Procedure
The application package should include:
- A covering letter that includes a) an explanation of how the applicant will complement and develop the vision and direction of the journal; b) a summary of the applicant’s editorial experience; and c) evidence of research and scholarship in the field of sport philosophy and ethics (the letter should not exceed 3 pages, single spaced, 12 point font);
- A CV.
